Resilience

You Are Stronger Than You Think

Have you ever wondered to yourself, ‘How did I make it this far?’ or ‘I should be a statistic?’ It may not feel like it, but you are a walking miracle. Many of us have survived traumatic events or even physical ailments and felt completely helpless. Yet, we have managed to make it through somehow. This phenomena is called resilience.

There are a lot of articles and research regarding resilience and resilience theory. According to the American Psychological Association, resilience is a process where individuals face trauma, daily stress, tragedy and adversity with the ability to bounce back.

Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress — such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems or workplace and financial stressors. It means "bouncing back" from difficult experience (APA, 2019).

Research indicates that the following are contributors to
strong resilience:

1.  Loving, supportive relationships including role models.

2. Environments that are empowering and bolster self-efficacy.

When these contributions to resilience are in place, it is easier to problem solve, manage strong feelings and develop characteristics within oneself that create an atmosphere of personal success.

Basically, if you are still breathing, functioning, and living this life ---even with struggle, chances are, you are a resilient human-being. You are a person who has perhaps had some supportive relationship to help increase your will to survive. Despite support, some of us however, may lead with a limp, yet we are still in the race and aren’t quitting! That is
something to celebrate!

Life can be difficult

I realize that life can present some very difficult circumstances. If anything, sometimes all one can do is just ‘show up’. But showing up is a powerful thing. It means that you are in the race and you have the will to fight and the will to live. Maybe you’re not able to muster much of a smile, nor gather the energy to do much, but you’re present for your life.

If you are a resilient survivor, chances are you have tried whatever it takes to feel better: faith, prayer, medication, therapy, holistic approaches, exercise, etc. Those interventions aren’t a sign of someone being a ‘problem’, but indicators that one is present for life, come hill or high water! So please don’t give up! Don’t let stigmas stop you. You are a champion! You are a warrior! No one is an expert on you, except God and YOU. Perhaps it is time to give yourself some real credit and take an inventory of the things you have done right for your life. You have earned those stripes! And you, my friend, are stronger than you think.
